Biography
Doug Robertson’s unique style is both casual and spontaneous capturing the inner depths of his subject while expressing his own personal artistic vision of the moment. His deep love and dedication for his art has led to more than 20 years of creating brilliant images of lasting beauty that truly reflect the soul of the people he photographs.
His enthusiasm for photography and driving spirit has led him into print competition gaining him continued recognition as artist as well as a professional. Very early in his career he was named Novice of the Year, awarded Non-Masters Best Print of Show and Heart of America Non-Master Photographer of the Year. Later competitions awarded him many more trophies and titles among which include two time Kansas Photographer of the Year, Best Photographer in Masters Division, 1st Fuji Masterpiece Award ever for the category entered and the Kodak Gallery Award Trilon. Along with the numerous prints that were selected for loan collection, two had the prestigious honor of being chosen by Walt Disney World to be displayed at their Epcot Center in Orlando, Fl. Although entering print competition for just four short years, his relentless pursuit of excellence in photography gained him a Master’s degree at an unprecedented rate and put him in the Top Ten each year he entered. Doug left competition to continue his freelance art doing volunteer work with organizations such as the Girl Scouts at Cowtown Museum Summer Program (since 1986) and, because of a deep compassion for animals, the Kansas Humane Society, producing the photographic artwork for their calender cover in 2004. He is currently working on a photographic art project that takes him on frequent trips to various parts of Central America.
Gaining his Masters in photography in 1992, formal training has included the Winona International School of Professional Photography, New York Institute of Photography and the Kansas Professional Photographers School. Remaining involved in the educational process, he has been a guest speaker for a number of Professional Photographers groups and has been an instructor at the Kansas Professional Photographers School. In the last 25 years, Doug has also been a member of several professional photography associations which include, Kansas Professional Photography Association (KPPA) serving on the board of directors, Professional Photographers of America (PPA), and as past president of Greater Wichita Professional Photographers Association (GWPPA).
For more than 20 years Doug Robertson has continued to be driven by his deep passion for his work and his true fondness for the many people he has photographed. By his own admission, his work is always fluid and changing, inspired by evolving technology and an ever-changing society.
